I started using cashback apps in April when we started our money makeover. I was a little skeptical at first because I felt I already spent too much time at the grocery store, and I didn’t want to add another step. But I was highly motivated to cut costs and pay off our student loan debt as soon as possible, so I thought I’d try out a few apps.
My two favorite cashback apps, iBotta and Receipt Hog, require little time or effort. I get cash back on purchases I would be making anyway. And I’ve actually accumulated a decent amount of cash back even though I really don’t spend that much.
iBotta was the first cashback app I downloaded. Each week, I see what offers are available when making out my grocery list. Examples of offers include: $1.00 off Maxwell House coffee, $1.50 off Colgate toothpaste, or $0.25 off any brand of bananas. There’s always $0.25 off any grocery item, and I jump on that each week.
I pick which offers will work with my grocery list and save them. I snap a picture of my receipt after shopping and add the offers. The amounts add up each week in my account, and then I can withdraw the cash once I reach $20.
A couple of things to note:
- It works with many different grocery stores, and sometimes it works with the store’s loyalty card so you don’t even have to take a picture of the receipt.
- It doesn’t work with Aldi, and I do a lot of my grocery shopping there.
- I like this app because it’s super easy to use, and it does offer a variety of “any brand” products to choose. I often don’t shop popular brand names, so that’s a real perk for me.
If you’re interested in trying it out, here’s the link, and I can get a bonus if you sign up this way. Also, there’s usually a welcome bonus for those who sign up and redeem offers.
Receipt Hog has been another favorite of mine. I snap pictures of all my receipts and earn coins, entries and spins. Nearly any kind of receipt can earn something! 1000 coins can be turned into $5 via Paypal, or Amazon or Visa giftcards. Entries enter you into monthly sweepstakes, and spins give you the opportunity to pull the slots to win more coins.
Sounds sort of complicated, but it’s really not. Just fun! Since I’ve entered all of our receipts, I’ve been able to earn $5 in no time. Click Here for more info.
I’ve tried a few other cashback apps, but iBotta and Receipt Hog have been my favorites and best fit my spending habits.
What other cashback apps have you tried? Are they worth the time and effort?
